Types of Mentoring

We offer a variety of mentoring options. Please review the list below to see which type of mentoring serves you best.

We guarantee that with our mentoring help, you will dramatically shorten your learning curve, and will get your book, writing project, or screenplay written and sold faster than any writer who tries to do it alone.

We are dedicated to helping you throughout the writing process. Whether you wish to work with us through e-mail or by telephone, we're here to help you cut through the red tape and challenges most writers have while brainstorming, outlining, and writing their "baby."

We deliver the personal touch to guarantee your success. We will give you the "honest truth" about your project, and we will never just tell you want you want to hear.

Everyone on our team has paid their dues in the writing, editing, and publishing fields. It's our way of giving back to the community and we sincerely want to help you succeed. If you have always dreamed of having a writing mentor, then you have come to the right place.

Let's get started, shall we?

Mentoring Options and Fees

As I've said before, we are a truly caring and compassionate team at The Writer's Mentor. We're human and there is one thing we believe in very strongly—we want you to feel 100 percent confident and comfortable with our mentoring options and processes.

Since we cannot (in most instances) meet you in person, I always suggest that you and I arrange a personal and confidential telephone call—a time for you to ask your questions, and a time for me to tell you how, and if, we can help you before you spend even one penny.

Working with someone you trust is important to us. We DO NOT want you to think about paying for our services until you "feel" that special connection, which is so truly vital to your success. When you work with us, we will provide the professional knowledge and individual plans that are right for your success.

The Initial Telephone Session

To get started, contact me, and tell me a little about your writing project and the type of help you're looking for. Then I'll set up an appointment for a brief phone session. After about fifteen minutes, I will ask if you would like to proceed with arranging a fee-based mentoring session.

If you wish to move forward, then I'll get working on your behalf right away. If, however, you choose to end the call and search for another mentor, that's fine, too. I understand.

Likewise, if I feel that I'm not the mentor to truly help you with your writing project, I will tell you, and also suggest other options you might wish to pursue. The bottom line is that we should both feel comfortable with the goals of your writing project, and the ability to work with each other.

The Next Step

When you choose to continue with the mentoring process after your initial telephone appointment, I can work with you on an hourly (as-needed) basis, or I can structure multiple calls and e-mails on a monthly basis as your writing coach until you say, "Stop." You decide. You're in charge of your project, and that's how I like it. I'm here to help you—just let me know what you want.

Fees and the Payment Process

I offer single-session and multiple-session mentoring fees, based on your specific needs. You tell me what you need, and I will suggest several options that will guarantee the success of your writing project.

When you want to arrange only one mentoring session at a time, then just submit your payment and I'll set up a date and time for us to talk about your writing project.

No hidden costs. I require a one-hour minimum—however, you can carry over 30 unused minutes toward a second call or advice through e-mail about your project, if you wish.

Depending upon the complexity of your project, and the number of mentoring sessions that you wish to arrange, I accommodate your financial situation by arranging monthly payments. I will send you an invoice once a month, in advance, but you will never pay for future mentoring sessions if you choose to discontinue our services.

General Questions about Writing or Publishing

I answer all your questions that pertain to writing or publishing. For example, some clients want to know:

  • Will people want to read the type of book I want to write?

  • Is there a market for my type of book, or has the field been saturated already?

  • Can I use real people's names and actual events in my book?

  • Does my book fall into the category of fiction or non-fiction?

  • Where can I get my book published?

  • Which will bring in the most sales for my book—traditional publishing or print-on-demand publishing?

  • What is the standard royalty percentage that I will earn from book sales?

Brainstorming

You might have a book idea in your head, but you want my expert guidance on how to expand the topic or create the characters. Or, perhaps you think your idea isn't big enough to fill 200 manuscript pages and you'd like my input for making your story or topic more compelling to read. Whatever types of brainstorming you would like me to provide for you, just ask, and I'll help jump-start your muse.

Encouragement and Inspiration

Similar to a life coach, I can encourage and inspire you to either begin writing your book, or I can give you time management tips for moving forward when your "day job" gets in the way, or when family members start feeling neglected that you're spending so much time away from them while you're writing your book.

Self-doubt can easily creep into your mind when you don't have someone telling you that they believe in your future as a writer, and providing flexible deadlines. That's where I can help. Just ask me to help you. I've been doing this for years, and I know what it's like to feel discouraged. Don't go it alone.

Plot Development for Novels

Whether you've taken our writing course: "How to Write a Fiction Book Fast!" or not, I can help you develop a compelling plot for your novel. It always entails "what's at stake" for your main character, and I can help you create that plot by offering ten to twenty alternatives for what your characters will do next to keep a reader's interest.

Chapter-by-Chapter Outlining for a Non-Fiction Book, e-book or Short Report

Every best-selling non-fiction book begins with creating a chapter-by-chapter outline BEFORE you begin writing one word of your manuscript. I can show you how to create chapter titles that intrigue the reader and I can show you how to have your information flow sequentially.

One of the pitfalls with most non-fiction books is their lack of organization for the facts and benefits. For example, if you're writing a book about pain relief and one of your topics is exercise, you will want to put everything about exercise into one chapter, rather than slicing up the information into many different locations in your book.

Feedback or Critique After Reviewing Your Text

Not dissimilar to our full manuscript review services, I can review just one chapter of your book and provide feedback, input, and suggestions for improving your text. Sometimes a one-hour mentoring session is all it takes to show you how to improve your writing before you finish the entire manuscript and have to re-write it, basically from scratch. It's better, I believe, to get your guidance at the beginning of your endeavors, rather than feeling discouraged when you have to start over.

Accountability

Over the years, I have found that unless you work under a deadline, a project doesn't get done. Some people are better at accountability for their own projects than others. When you have trouble staying "on task" with your writing goals, I can schedule brief mentoring sessions to keep you on track.

For example, several clients work with me on a weekly or twice-weekly basis. I require them to send me an e-mail explaining what they have accomplished during that week or two-week period. It's a deadline. I give feedback on your writing, along with much-needed encouragement, and tips for moving forward.

When I don't receive the e-mail, then I follow up to see what's getting in the way of keeping your writing commitment—then we set up a new deadline that you can work towards, instead of postponing your goal or quitting. Writing and completing your book is all about perseverance and finishing the task you started.

When You're Stuck and Don't Know What to Write

Have you ever just felt stuck somewhere during your writing process? Whether it involves a fear of failure, or if you feel like you're running out of ideas, just set up a mentoring session with me, and I can get you back into the writing mode. Don't procrastinate when you know that I'm here to help you.

Let's get started, shall we?

What's the difference between a
mentor and a coach?

A mentor uses his or her hard-earned knowledge to instruct, guide and gently lead you to bring about the story you want to tell. He or she is known as a muse, because we draw out of you what you already have inside your heart, but have not been allowed to explore it, until now.

We show you the ropes, shortcuts and positive paths to getting your ideas down on paper, and then we encourage you to keep going until you write, "The End." If you stray off course, all you have to do is call your mentor, and explain your situation. We're here for you and we want you to succeed. That's our mission.

A coach is someone who helps you follow a structured plan or course of action. He or she helps you strategize how you can win the game. Just as Olympic Gold winners have coaches to make sure they practice and perfect their athletic skills, a writing coach offers the writer a plan and structured path for guaranteed success. When you're accountable to your coach, you won't let her down, will you? Why? Because she believes in you!

How Can you Benefit By Hiring a Writing Mentor and Coach?

First, we talk with you to determine where your writing project is, during the development process. We talk about what you would like to do and how you could use our help. Then we determine the best course of action that fits into your schedule. After that, you will decide which coaching package you can afford and then we get to work.

We can answer all your writing, marketing and publishing questions as you work through and complete each phase of your book, screenplay, or writing project. These coaching sessions are conducted by telephone and you can choose the days and hours that suit you. In addition, while we're coaching and mentoring you, feel free to send any questions by e-mail and we will answer them professionally and promptly.

Bottom line? You set a timeline for how long you want to work with us to complete your writing project. It's that simple. Hire us for an hour, or hire us to walk beside you for three months. Either way, you'll shorten your journey, eliminate a lot of stress, and you'll benefit from all that we've learned over the years that can and will enhance your writing efforts. Is this a good thing? I'll let you tell me when you experience the thrill and excitement of holding your completed work in your hands, knowing that you accomplished your goal and your dream is in sight. Shall we begin?
